The Golden Beryl Pocket of July
2,1999
The Orchard Quarry, Buckfield,
Maine
A golden beryl pocket was encountered on July
2,1999 at the Orchard Pit Quarry. Although many previous pockets were found
before the July 2 pocket, most were etched out and contained quartz crystals
and bertrandites in beryl casts. This
was the first large pocket to still have most of its contents intact.
Besides beryl, this pocket contained scepter quartz crystals, columbites,
apatites, microclines and acicular phenakites. The picture below shows
some of the more significant pieces. Above several pieces of deep golden
beryl are visible in the breccia at the bottom of the pocket.
